Traveling and Working Out

We’ve all been there. The night before you leave, inspiration at an all-time high. “I’ll workout every day i’m away.” The voice in your head sounds good, real good. You may even have a whispering of “I’m gonna get up early and workout in the morning”. You arrive, fall asleep, aaaand then morning comes. Literally nothing sounds worse than getting up early to workout.

Tack on stress from traveling, possibly work too, and life and you’ve got a cocktail guaranteed to keep you in bed.

So, what does it take to stay active while traveling? I’m glad you asked.

Generate momentum. it works both ways. Small wins lead to bigger wins as much as dipping your toe into the “treat yo self” zone makes it easier to full on treat yo self mode.

It doesn’t have to be immediately as you wake up, but before you embark on your day. Maybe ask Siri to set a timer for 10 minutes and move around. The goal isn’t to do 100 burpees for time, just move. Lay on the ground and something simple, do some yoga, put on a guided meditation. If you’re super weird go for the burpees, you do you my friend.

Regardless of what you do, rejoice in the gentle nudge it gives you to continue in the same trajectory. Gyms have never been more accessible, online workouts have never been easier to do, and the earth does a heckin’ great job of making it worth your while to get outside and walk or jog around.

Carry this momentum into your meals, into your snacking (or lack thereof), and into your sleep habits.

Planning ahead is worth its weight in gold, for goals.

Pack workout clothes on the top so you see them (momentum). Bring a small band that takes up virtually no space so that you have access to a plethora of new exercises from anywhere.

Use the google machine to find places to get active at and find healthy restaurants you can order food that suits you at. Snag some protein bars or healthy snacks you can bring so you don’t get hangry.

Fail to plan, plan to fail. Do the work now to reap the rewards later!

Give yourself some grace. Maybe “some” is the keyword for you, That’s the part I struggle on too.

We’re all human. Regardless of work or pleasure, having the luxury to see new sights, meet new people, and experience new things puts you into a wildly small minority.

Very, very few of us are getting paid to workout and be fit. Live a little and eat that cake or donut. Heck maybe even eat a dozen of em, I don’t care. (‘cuz that’s what i’d do)

Above all

Trust your gut and listen to it when it’s time to eat that cake, but trust it equally when it tells you to shut up, ‘cuz abs.

Have the discipline to stay aligned with your goals. We all know the curve of success has many ups and downs, but progress is progress and staying the course even at 1% is so much better than dipping your toe into regression.

Lastly, be confident that one day or even one week off the rails will not ruin your journey. Adding some extra “work” to your plate in return for an experience you otherwise may never have again may be worth it.
